Frequently Asked Questions
How is the life skills section of the IELTS exam assessed?

A certified IELTS examiner will assess your performance in the Listening and Speaking tests based on the following criteria:

• Information Acquisition
• Information Transmission

• Oral Expression

• Participation in discussions

Throughout the exam you are allowed to take notes to prepare your responses; your notes will not be marked for content.

How do we guarantee that examiners provide consistent and fair grades for each candidate? Are there differences between examiners and between regions?

To ensure fairness, all exam scores are based on candidates' performance on the exam day and are assessed using the same scoring criteria. In addition, IELTS has a systematic procedure to re-mark a certain proportion of the test papers. All IELTS examiners have received comprehensive training and have a strict supervision and assessment mechanism to regularly monitor their scoring.

In the exam, True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given are all written as abbreviations.

Both abbreviations and full names are acceptable.

Can the composition format be either top format or indented format?

Either top or indented format is acceptable.

I heard that when the exam includes both Category A and Category G, the listening difficulty of Category A will be reduced. Is that true?

The listening sections for both the A and G exams are the same.

I would like to know how long is the validity period of IELTS scores?

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the date of the test. Please note that the school, institution, or embassy you are applying to may have slightly different requirements for the validity period of the scores. Please contact them directly to ensure that your scores meet the requirements.

Can I apply for a UK visa using any IELTS score?

If you are using IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration or IELTS Life Skills as part of your application for a UK visa (except for some student visa types) you will need to sit the test at an IELTS test center authorized by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the test will be conducted under the conditions specified by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

You will receive an IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) score report form, or an IELTS Life Skills score report form, which shows that you took a test that meets the requirements of UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

How do I decide whether to take the academic or general IELTS test?

The academic test evaluates the candidate's English proficiency and assesses whether the candidate's English level is sufficient for university or postgraduate study. Admission to university or postgraduate courses is based on the results of this test. If you plan to study abroad for further studies or higher education, you should choose the academic IELTS test. The general training test focuses on basic language skills for survival in a wide range of social and educational environments, not on language skills required for academic research.

The IELTS test is widely recognized and favored in Commonwealth countries.
Do American institutions accept IELTS scores?

Currently, more than 3,000 universities and colleges in the United States recognize IELTS scores. These institutions include all Ivy League schools (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Pennsylvania, etc.), as well as the top 200 universities in the US university rankings that are favored by the majority of Chinese students. The number of institutions that recognize IELTS scores is still increasing.

I don't want to take the new TOEFL.  Can I use IELTS scores together with SAT (undergraduate) or GRE (graduate) scores to apply for university?

English language scores are an essential requirement in the application process for studying in the United States. Colleges and universities in various countries treat IELTS and other English tests equally. SAT plus IELTS; GRE/GMAT plus IELTS can take you to world-renowned universities! Foreign universities often judge whether to issue you an admission letter or even a scholarship based on the applicant's comprehensive qualities.
